• Conference on The Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace and Book Launch
Posted by PiP Administrator September 25, 2014

    26th September 2014 - 26th September 2014, New Delhi, National

PRIA is organizing a conference on The Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace at India Habitat Centre on 26 September 2014. On the same occasion, a new book, ‘Engendering the Workplace: Gender Discrimination and Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Organisations’ written by PRIA Director Dr. Martha Farrell would also be launched.

Despite the enactment of The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, its implementation is lacking among government agencies, public sector undertakings, educational institutions and private business. Most workplaces have not even constituted mandatory committees as prescribed in the Act. Very few district administrations have notified a Local Area Committees as required by the Act.

Increasing the rate of participation of women in the Indian economy, as emphasised by the government, requires making all workplaces safe for women. Yet, reports of sexual harassment abound in the media every day. There is an urgent need for greater sensitization of men and women towards this set of issues, as well as greater movement for compliance with the provisions of the Act.

PRIA has been working to promote such awareness and compliance for the past five years. It has worked with a diverse set of actors in this regard, like National Commission of Women, Airports Authority of India, ILO/Labour Directorate, several universities and colleges, private business and Panchayati Raj institutions.

Based on these experiences, PRIA has designed and developed a 3 hour long online training capsule on the provisions of this Act. PRIA has also published a book authored by its Director Dr.Martha Farrell – Engendering the Workplace: Gender Discrimination and Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Organisations.
